Contacting the Other Side
"My spirit guide told me..." "I received a message from the other side..." "I channel an entity named..." These statements, once confined to séances and spiritualist churches, have become mainstream in New Age spirituality. Spirit guides, channeling, and communication with non-physical entities are central to much of contemporary New Age practice.
For many New Agers, spirit guides are trusted advisors—wise beings from other dimensions who offer guidance, healing, and spiritual instruction. Channeling (allowing a spirit to speak through you) is considered a spiritual gift. Contact with angels, ascended masters, and departed souls is sought and celebrated.
But what does the Bible say about these practices? What are these entities, really? And how should Christians respond when friends or family members become involved in spirit communication?
This is not a fringe issue. According to surveys, nearly a third of Americans believe it's possible to communicate with the dead. Mediums have popular TV shows. "Angel communication" books fill mainstream bookstores. The desire to connect with the spiritual realm is powerful and widespread. Understanding this phenomenon is essential for contemporary Christian witness.
What New Age Spirituality Teaches
Spirit Guides
In New Age teaching, spirit guides are non-physical beings who assist humans on their spiritual journey. They may be described as:
- Guardian spirits assigned to individuals from birth
- Deceased ancestors or loved ones who continue to help from the other side
- Ascended masters — highly evolved souls who have completed their earthly incarnations (Buddha, Jesus, St. Germain, etc., are often named)
- Angels — though redefined from biblical angels into benevolent spiritual helpers available on request
- Nature spirits or elementals
- Higher self — the divine aspect of one's own being
- Extraterrestrial beings from other planets or dimensions
Spirit guides are typically contacted through meditation, visualization, automatic writing, dreams, or the use of tools like tarot cards or pendulums. Practitioners are taught to quiet their minds, ask for guidance, and receive impressions, words, images, or feelings from their guides.
Channeling
Channeling goes beyond receiving impressions from spirits—it involves allowing a spirit entity to speak or act through the channeler's body. The channeler enters an altered state (from light trance to complete unconsciousness) and the entity uses their voice, hands, or writing to communicate.
Famous channeled entities include:
- Seth — channeled by Jane Roberts, producing numerous books in the 1970s-80s
- Ramtha — a 35,000-year-old warrior channeled by JZ Knight
- Abraham — a collective of entities channeled by Esther Hicks, teaching the Law of Attraction
- Kryon — an angelic entity channeled by Lee Carroll
- Bashar — an extraterrestrial channeled by Darryl Anka
Channeled teachings often promote standard New Age concepts: all is one, you are God, create your own reality, there is no death, all paths lead to the same truth.
New Age "Angels"
New Age spirituality has appropriated the language of angels while fundamentally redefining them. New Age angels are:
- Available to everyone regardless of their relationship with God
- Summoned by human initiative rather than sent by God
- Focused on human comfort, guidance, and wish-fulfillment
- Non-judgmental and affirming of all spiritual paths
- Eager to serve human desires rather than God's purposes
This bears little resemblance to biblical angels, who are messengers of God, sent by Him, serving His purposes, and often inspiring fear rather than comfort when they appear.
Notice how channeled entities and spirit guides consistently promote the same basic message: humanity's divinity, the unreality of sin, the equal validity of all paths, the non-existence of judgment. This uniformity suggests a common source—and it's exactly the opposite of what Scripture teaches.
Biblical Teaching on the Spirit Realm
The Bible Affirms a Spirit Realm
Scripture does not deny the existence of a spiritual realm or spiritual beings. Angels, demons, Satan—all are real. But the Bible gives specific teaching about how we should (and should not) relate to this realm.
Biblical Angels
Scripture presents angels very differently from New Age teaching:
- Angels are God's messengers and servants, not ours (Hebrews 1:14; Psalm 103:20-21)
- They are sent by God, not summoned by humans (Luke 1:19, 26)
- They refuse worship and redirect it to God (Revelation 22:8-9)
- Their appearances often inspire fear, requiring "Do not be afraid" (Luke 1:13, 30; Matthew 28:5)
- They serve God's purposes, which may include judgment, not just comfort (Genesis 19; 2 Kings 19:35)
Demons Are Real
Scripture also teaches that fallen angels (demons) exist and seek to deceive humans:
"And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness."
— 2 Corinthians 11:14-15This is crucial: demonic beings can appear benevolent. They can present themselves as helpful guides, wise teachers, or loving angels. The warm, peaceful feelings associated with spirit contact do not guarantee the entity is good. Demons are deceivers.
Communicating with Spirits Is Forbidden
Scripture explicitly prohibits attempting to contact spirits:
"There shall not be found among you anyone who... is a medium or a necromancer or one who inquires of the dead, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the LORD."
— Deuteronomy 18:10-12"Do not turn to mediums or necromancers; do not seek them out, and so make yourselves unclean by them: I am the LORD your God."
— Leviticus 19:31The Bible uses strong language: "abomination," "unclean." God takes this seriously. The prohibition covers mediums (those who channel spirits), necromancers (those who contact the dead), and anyone who seeks them out.
The Dead Cannot Be Contacted
Despite claims of mediums, the Bible indicates that the dead cannot be contacted by the living:
"For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing, and they have no more reward, for the memory of them is forgotten. Their love and their hate and their envy have already perished, and forever they have no more share in all that is done under the sun."
— Ecclesiastes 9:5-6When people believe they're contacting deceased loved ones, they are being deceived. The "grandmother" giving comforting messages from the other side is not actually grandmother.
What Are These Entities, Really?
If spirit guides aren't what they claim to be, what are they? Scripture suggests several possibilities:
1. Demons Masquerading as Benevolent Beings
Given Satan's ability to disguise himself as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14), the most straightforward explanation is that spirit guides are demonic entities presenting themselves as helpful guides. Their goal is to deceive, to draw people away from God, and to create spiritual bondage.
2. Human Imagination and Psychological Phenomena
Some experiences attributed to spirit guides may be products of the human mind—imagination, subconscious thoughts, or psychological dissociation. People can genuinely experience what they interpret as contact with an external entity when the experience is internal.
3. A Combination
Likely, both factors are involved. Some experiences may be purely psychological; others may involve genuine demonic activity. In either case, the practice is spiritually dangerous—either because it opens doors to demonic deception or because it leads people to trust their own imagination as divine guidance.
One way to evaluate spiritual entities is by what they teach. Spirit guides consistently deny the core truths of Christianity: human sinfulness, Christ's unique deity, salvation by grace through faith, coming judgment. If an entity contradicts Scripture, its identity is revealed regardless of how it appears.
Why People Seek Spirit Contact
Understanding why people pursue spirit communication helps us minister compassionately:
Grief and Loss
Many turn to mediums after losing a loved one. The desire to reconnect, to receive comfort, to know their loved one is okay drives them to seek contact with the dead. This grief is real and deserves compassion.
Desire for Guidance
Life is uncertain. Decisions are difficult. The promise of wise guidance from benevolent spirits who know more than we do is appealing. People want direction for their lives.
Spiritual Hunger
Many people are spiritually hungry but have rejected traditional religion. Spirit contact offers a "spiritual" experience without the doctrines, demands, or institutional structures of organized religion. It's spirituality on their terms.
Experience of Power
Being a channel or having a spirit guide can feel empowering. It suggests special access, unique gifts, and elevated spiritual status. This appeals to human pride.
Real Spiritual Experiences
Some people have had genuine spiritual experiences—encounters they cannot explain, knowledge they couldn't have known, phenomena they can't deny. These experiences are real; the interpretation of them is the problem.
Engaging Those Involved in Spirit Contact
Approach with Compassion, Not Condemnation
People involved in these practices are usually sincere seekers, not intentional occultists. They may have experienced real pain (grief, confusion, spiritual hunger) that led them to these practices. Approach them with the same compassion Jesus showed to those searching for truth.
Ask About Their Experiences
- "How did you get involved with spirit guides/channeling?"
- "What drew you to this? What were you looking for?"
- "What has your experience been like?"
- "Have you ever had any negative experiences?"
Listen carefully. Understanding their story helps you connect their real needs with the true God who can meet them.
Raise Thoughtful Questions
- "How do you know these entities are who they claim to be?"
- "What would you do if a spirit told you something that harmed you or someone else?"
- "Have you ever tested the spirits to verify their identity or trustworthiness?"
- "If there are good spirits, could there also be deceptive ones? How would you tell the difference?"
- "What do your spirit guides say about Jesus? Why do you think that is?"
Share What God Offers
Christianity offers everything people seek in spirit contact, but from a safe and true source:
- For those grieving: The resurrection and the certain hope of reunion with believing loved ones (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18)
- For those seeking guidance: The Holy Spirit who guides believers into truth (John 16:13), God's Word that is a lamp to our feet (Psalm 119:105), and the promise of wisdom for those who ask (James 1:5)
- For those spiritually hungry: Relationship with the living God who knows you, loves you, and satisfies your soul (John 4:14; Psalm 107:9)
- For those seeking power: The Holy Spirit who empowers believers for service (Acts 1:8)
"And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you."
— John 14:16-17Christians don't need spirit guides—we have the Holy Spirit. Not an external entity of uncertain origin, but God Himself dwelling within us, guiding, comforting, and empowering.
The Dangers of Spirit Contact
For those considering involvement or already involved, the dangers are real:
Spiritual Bondage
Involvement in spirit contact can lead to spiritual oppression or bondage. Many who leave these practices report feeling spiritually "tied" to the entities they contacted, experiencing harassment, or struggling to be free.
Deception
If these entities are demonic, their guidance will ultimately lead away from truth, away from Christ, and away from salvation. The deception may be subtle and gradual, but the destination is spiritual destruction.
Psychological Harm
Practices that involve altered states of consciousness, dissociation, or allowing other entities to use your body can have psychological consequences—confusion about identity, difficulty distinguishing one's own thoughts from "messages," and even psychotic episodes in vulnerable individuals.
Separation from God
Most seriously, these practices separate people from the true God. Instead of seeking Him, they seek spirits. Instead of trusting His Word, they trust channeled messages. Instead of the Holy Spirit, they rely on spirit guides. This is the ultimate danger—missing the God who loves them and can save them.
Conclusion: The True Guide
The desire for spiritual guidance, for contact with the unseen realm, for comfort in grief and direction in life—these desires are not wrong. But God has provided the means to meet them safely and truly: His Word, His Spirit, His Son.
We don't need to channel unknown entities when we can pray to our Father who knows us completely. We don't need spirit guides of uncertain origin when we have the Holy Spirit who is God Himself. We don't need messages from the dead when we have the living Word of God.
"When they say to you, 'Inquire of the mediums and the necromancers who chirp and mutter,' should not a people inquire of their God?"
— Isaiah 8:19Should not a people inquire of their God? This is the question for those pursuing spirit contact. Why seek guidance from entities of unknown origin when the Creator of the universe invites you to know Him? Why settle for spirits when you can have the Spirit of God?
God is not distant or silent. Through Christ, we have access to the Father (Ephesians 2:18). Through the Spirit, we have guidance into truth (John 16:13). Through Scripture, we have a lamp for our path (Psalm 119:105). Everything people seek in spirit guides is found more fully, more safely, and more truly in relationship with the living God.
Discussion Questions
- Why do you think the Bible so strongly prohibits attempting to contact spirits or the dead (Deuteronomy 18:10-12, Leviticus 19:31)? What dangers is God protecting us from?
- How would you respond to someone who says, 'My spirit guide has only given me good advice and helped me through difficult times. How can something helpful be wrong?'
- The lesson emphasizes that Christians have the Holy Spirit and don't need spirit guides. How would you explain the difference between the Holy Spirit and a spirit guide to someone involved in New Age spirituality?
